Scuba Certification Types

The two most commonly recognized dive certifications are the Open Water Diver certification and the Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

The Open Water Diver certification is the entry-level certification that allows divers to dive independently with a buddy, to a depth of 60 feet (18 meters). To obtain this certification, divers must complete a course that covers basic dive theory, equipment, and skills. This typically involves a combination of classroom sessions, pool or confined water dives, and open water dives.

The Advanced Open Water Diver certification is the next level of certification, which allows divers to explore more advanced dive sites and activities, such as deep diving, wreck diving, and night diving. To obtain this certification, divers must have already obtained their Open Water Diver certification, and complete a course that covers five specialty dives, including a deep dive and a navigation dive.

Both certifications are issued by recognized scuba diving training agencies
